Lou Reed went through a number of different stages in his musical career, and we’re not just talking about the Velvet Under years and the solo years. Our man Lou spent the first half of the 1970s on RCA Records, spent the second half of the ‘70s on Arista Records, and returned to RCA for the first half of the ‘80s, after which he bounced over to Sire Records, where he remained for the rest of his career.
As it happens, it’s the Sire Records period that brings us here today: NEW YORK, Reed’s debut album for Sire, has just been reissued by Rhino Records in a deluxe edition, and given that it was one of the most acclaimed albums of his career, you can rest assured that we’ve done it up right.
NEW YORK: DELUXE EDITION is a 3-CD / DVD / 2-LP set – yes, the LPs are pressed on 180-gram vinyl – and in addition to including a newly-remastered version of the original 1989 album, it also includes 26 previously-unreleased live and studio recordings as well as the DVD debut of The New York Album, a concert video recorded during the NEW YORK tour. In addition, this set comes packaged with a 12” x 12” hardcover book featuring new liner notes by David Fricke and essays by Don Fleming, and it was produced by Fleming, Laurie Anderson, Bill Ingot, Jason Stern, and the recently-deceased Hal Willner.
